Courier Insurance FAQs

Straightforward answers to common questions about Goods in Transit, courier liability cover, managing your policy and arranging insurance online.

Understanding Your Cover

The basics of courier insurance

Start here if you are unsure which parts of cover may apply to your business.

What is Goods in Transit insurance?

Goods in Transit insurance is designed to protect against certain losses involving customers' goods while they are being transported, subject to the basis of cover, policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Does Goods in Transit insurance cover my van?

No. Goods in Transit cover is separate from the motor insurance required for your vehicle.

Courier or Hire and Reward motor insurance will normally be required separately for the van itself.

What is the difference between courier insurance and Goods in Transit insurance?

Courier insurance can involve several different covers. Motor insurance protects the vehicle, while Goods in Transit relates to your exposure for goods being carried.

Public Liability and Employers' Liability can also be added where required.

What Goods in Transit limit should I choose?

The limit should reflect the maximum value of goods you could be responsible for at any one time, together with any requirements imposed by the company or courier network you work for.

If you are unsure, contact us before selecting the limit.

What is Public Liability insurance?

Public Liability insurance can provide protection where your business is legally liable for injury to another person or damage to third-party property, subject to the policy terms.

When do I need Employers' Liability insurance?

Employers' Liability insurance is generally required where a business employs staff, subject to limited legal exemptions.

The quotation journey will ask about your business structure and employees so the appropriate cover can be considered.

Can I insure more than one vehicle?

Yes. The scheme can accommodate businesses operating multiple vehicles, subject to the information provided and underwriting criteria.

Can subcontractors be included?

Cover may be available where subcontractors are used. The quotation will ask about your use of subcontractors so that the appropriate terms can be considered.

Courier Networks & Contracts

Working for Amazon, Evri, DPD or another courier network?

Larger courier networks can impose specific insurance requirements. These questions cover some of the areas you may need to consider.

I work for Amazon, Evri or DPD. Can you cover me?

Our courier scheme can cater for selected courier network contracts including businesses working with Amazon, Evri, DPD and other networks.

Cover remains subject to underwriting, eligibility and the particular contractual requirements involved.

Can I select up to £100,000 Goods in Transit cover?

Higher Goods in Transit limits of up to £100,000 may be available for selected courier network contract requirements, subject to underwriting and policy terms.

Can I arrange Public Liability up to £10 million?

Public Liability limits up to £10 million may be available where required by a contract, subject to the relevant underwriting criteria.

What if my courier contract has specific insurance requirements?

If your contract specifies particular limits, conditions or insurance requirements, provide us with the details so we can check whether they can be accommodated under the scheme.

What if I work for more than one courier network?

That does not necessarily prevent cover. Tell us which courier networks or principals you work for during the quotation so the overall exposure can be considered.

Does naming a courier network mean Ratcliffe's is partnered with them?

No. References to courier networks are examples of the types of contractual requirements the scheme may be able to accommodate and do not imply endorsement, partnership or affiliation.

Getting a Quote

Before you start

A few things that can make the quotation process quicker.

What information will I need to get a quote?

You will normally need details of your business, vehicles, the type and value of goods carried, courier contracts, subcontractor use, required liability limits and your claims history.

Can I get a quote online?

Yes. You can complete the online quotation journey and select the cover appropriate to your business.

Some risks may require referral to our team before terms can be confirmed.

Can I still get a quote if I have had a previous claim?

Possibly. Previous claims do not automatically mean cover is unavailable, but they may need to be reviewed by an underwriter before terms can be offered.

What types of goods may need to be referred?

Certain higher-risk, unusual or higher-value goods may need to be referred before cover can be confirmed.

The quotation process will ask about the goods you carry and identify where further information is needed.

What if I am unsure which cover to select?

Contact our team before completing the purchase. We can discuss your activities and help you understand the options available under the scheme.
